Podcast Production Process
Learn the three stages of podcast production and why each one matters.
Creating a podcast generally follows the same general process, no matter who’s making it or what it’s about. We’ve distilled that process into five phases that will scaffold the podcast production process for you:
Phase 1: Concept
Part 1: Discover — Define purpose, audience, and goals
Part 2: Design — Choose podcast format and structure
This is where your idea takes shape. You clarify what you’re making, who it’s for, and how it will work. The YPG Podcasting Resources take care of this phase for you with our bank of podcast prompts. However, if you want to make your own podcast from scratch, you’ll start here.
Phase 2: Planning & Writing
Part 1: Plan — Research, scheduling, and logistics
Part 2: Write — Script or outline
This is where you gather information, organize your team, and write down what you’re going to say.
Phase 3: Pre-production & Recording
Part 1: Tech Prep — Gear and room setup
Part 2: Record — Capture audio and video
This is where get everything ready and then capture the raw material for your episode.
Phase 4: Post-production
Part 1: Edit — Structure, clarity, and polish
Part 2: Finalize — Export files and metadata
This is where your episode comes together and gets ready for release.
Phase 5: Release & Reflect
Part 1: Publish — Upload, distribute, and promote
Part 2: Reflect — Review and improve
This is where your work reaches listeners and where you evaluate what worked and what you would change next time.
It’s not always a completely linear process, but this is the path you’ll take. The YPG Podcasting Resources come with extensive graphic organizers organized by phase to help keep you on track.
