Interview Podcast Production Phases

Find out why the interview format requires a different approach to production.

You don’t know what your Interview Podcast is actually about until you record the interview!

You put your questions together and go into the interview with a general idea of what you’re going for, but until the interviewee answers your questions, you don’t know the whole story. This knowledge gap affects the production process when producing an interview podcast.

In effect, you will end up looping Phase 2 (Planning & Writing) and Phase 3 (Pre-production & Recording). You write your questions and record your interview. Then, after analyzing your interviewee’s answers, you begin the scripting process anew and record new material informed by the things you learned conducting the interview.

You can avoid needing to do two recording sessions with additional preproduction. If you can connect with your interview subject ahead of time and work through the contours of the interview, it can give you the context and insights you need to effectively execute an interview podcast in one sitting. But still, just maybe. You’ll probably still need to do some writing and recording after the initial recording session.
