Podcast Formats
Learn how format shapes the way a story is told.
A podcast’s format shapes how information is organized and how the audience experiences the content.
There are many podcast industry-standard formats. We’ve centered the YPG Podcasting Resources around three, outlined below:
Interview – A host asks questions and guides a guest through a conversation.
Narrative – A structured story that may include voiceover, clips, music, and sound design.
Chat – A conversational format built around discussion or commentary. It can include multiple hosts talking together, or a single host speaking directly to the audience in a relaxed, unscripted style.
Note: Documentary and News are other industry-standard formats not included here. They typically require extensive research and reporting. For now, we are building strong foundations in storytelling and conversation.
Same Topic, Three Different Formats
The three videos that follow all discuss Arasha’s experience in speech and debate in high school. The topic stays the same, but the format changes.
You will see:
An Interview version, where Lawrence’s questions guide the conversation.
A Narrative version, where Arasha tells her story and Lawrence listens.
A Chat version, where Lawrence and Arasha go back and forth about her experiences.
As you watch, pay attention to how the format affects:
Tone
Pacing
Energy
What feels emphasized
Even though all three imaginary podcasts are about the same thing, different details emerge from the different communication styles and they all feel quite different.
As a creator, format is a choice. And that choice shapes how your audience experiences the story.
